Real Madrid Can Overtake Barcelona As Champions League’s Most Successful Team
Los Blancos can secure their fifth trophy since the new format was introduced, and their 11th overall in the competition when they meet city rivals Atletico this weekend
Real Madrid have the chance to overtake Spanish rivals Barcelona as the most successful club in Champions League history as they take on Atletico Madrid in this year’s final.
Both Barca and Real have won the competition four times since its reform in the 1992/93 season, ahead of the all-Madrid final at San Siro on May 28.
Barcelona defeated Arsenal at Stade de France in 2006 to win their first in the Champions League era, while their domestic dominance under Pep Guardiola spilled into Europe and saw them collect the 2008/09 and 2010/2011 trophies.
The Camp Nou club are also the current holders of the competition having beaten Juventus 3-1 in Berlin last season.
Real, however, have been crowned champions of Europe a record 10 times.
Los Blancos downed Juventus in 1998, Valencia in 2000, Bayer Leverkusen in 2002 and secured La Decima in 2014 against Atletico.
Diego Simeone’s side are one of three clubs to have been involved in two finals but not to have won the trophy, so will be hoping for a case of third time lucky in Milan on Saturday.
